5 Best PSP Action Games for Combat, Stealth and Adventure
The best PSP action game depends on what you want to do between the big moments. Choose God of War: Chains of Olympus for mythological battles and puzzles, Ghost of Sparta for another Kratos adventure with new weapons, or Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for infiltration and building a force of your own. Daxter and Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters offer a different direction: colourful adventures with gadgets, movement and exploration.

This shortlist compares five original PSP releases by their main appeal. It is a guide to choosing your next game, rather than a score ranking. If you also want racing, sports or RPGs, visit the broader best PSP games guide.

Quick picks: which PSP action game fits you?
- Combat and Greek mythology: Chains of Olympus mixes battles with puzzles in a story set before the first God of War.
- More Kratos and a different arsenal: Ghost of Sparta explores his past and adds the spear-and-shield Arms of Sparta.
- Stealth and long-term development: Peace Walker combines infiltration with recruiting soldiers and developing Mother Base.
- A platform adventure with a comic lead: Daxter puts Jak's companion in the spotlight on a mission to rescue his friend.
- Weapons, armour and unusual worlds: Size Matters pairs Ratchet and Clank with equipment choices and a shrinking mechanic.
God of War: Chains of Olympus — battles with a story to follow
Chains of Olympus is a useful starting point if your idea of an action game is taking a central character through a dangerous, authored adventure. Kratos faces creatures from Greek mythology while the world falls into darkness. The story takes place before the original God of War, so this is a separate PSP chapter rather than a handheld copy of the PS2 game.
If you are choosing between the two handheld adventures, our God of War PSP play-order guide separates release order, story placement and edition differences.
Combat sits alongside story-related puzzles, with weapons and magic providing different ways to approach encounters. Choose it when you want the next location and the next confrontation to give your session direction. If you prefer wandering freely and deciding your own objectives, that is a different priority from the one this adventure serves.
First-session suggestion: learn the basic attacks and defensive controls before trying to use every available option. When a fight goes badly, identify whether the problem is timing, positioning or an unfamiliar move. That makes another attempt more useful than repeating the same inputs faster.
God of War: Ghost of Sparta — a new chapter and new tools
Ghost of Sparta follows the events of the first God of War and turns toward Kratos' family and the past that troubles him. It keeps the single-player action-adventure focus while adding weapons, magic and traversal abilities. The Arms of Sparta, a spear and shield combination, give this entry a concrete point of distinction from its PSP predecessor.
Pick it if you already know that Kratos' style of adventure is what you want. Pick Chains of Olympus first if you would rather follow the order in which the two PSP games were released. They are distinct stories, so owning one does not mean you already have the content of the other.
First-session suggestion: make room to learn a newly introduced weapon instead of immediately returning to the familiar option. The reason to choose a second game in a series is partly to see how its new tools change the decisions you make.
Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker — plan your approach
Peace Walker is the strongest fit here for someone who wants action to begin with observation. Its Costa Rican setting follows Big Boss as he confronts an armed force and develops his own organisation. Infiltration, recruiting soldiers and constructing Mother Base make the campaign about more than the next firefight.
That wider focus is also the main trade-off. If your ideal session is a continuous sequence of close combat encounters, begin with one of the God of War games. If deciding how to enter an area and what to develop afterwards sounds appealing, Peace Walker belongs near the top of your shortlist.
First-session suggestion: take a moment to understand the objective before moving forward. Treat a failed approach as information about the area. The original game includes multiplayer modes, but this recommendation concerns its solo experience and does not imply multiplayer support in EMUspace.
For a narrower comparison of infiltration and tactical action, see our PSP stealth games guide.
Daxter — a different kind of adventure lead
Daxter turns the familiar companion into the protagonist. His mission takes him around Haven City as an exterminator while he works toward rescuing Jak from prison. The premise gives the adventure a comic personality, with gadgets supporting a game built around the character rather than a large squad or military organisation.
It is our pick when you want a platform adventure instead of another weapon-focused campaign. Choosing it alongside Peace Walker would give you two substantially different experiences; choosing both God of War entries would give you more of a style you already enjoy. Neither approach is wrong, but it is useful to decide which sort of variety you want.
First-session suggestion: give yourself time to get comfortable with movement before rushing through a new area. If a jump or route is awkward, checking your position can be more productive than immediately trying a faster approach.
To choose specifically by movement, compare Daxter, Size Matters and LocoRoco in our PSP platformer guide.
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters — equipment and unusual spaces
Size Matters brings Ratchet and Clank into an original adventure built for PSP. Weapons, customisable armour and shrinking are central parts of its premise. The Technomite world and a journey inside Clank's head give you a sense of the unusual places this adventure can take you.
Choose it over Daxter when equipment is part of the appeal. Rather than selecting a game solely for its setting, ask whether you enjoy checking what your character can use and how those options suit the next situation. Choose Daxter when the character-led platform adventure is the bigger attraction.
First-session suggestion: read what a new piece of equipment does and try it in a situation you understand. Changing several things at once makes it harder to work out which choice helped. This is an editorial suggestion for learning the game, not a required build or a completion guide.
How to narrow the list to one game
Begin with the activity you want most: fighting, infiltration or navigating a platform adventure. Then think about what you want around that activity. A story that moves you from encounter to encounter points toward God of War; recruitment and an expanding base point toward Peace Walker; character, gadgets and unusual environments point toward Daxter or Size Matters.
For a gun-focused alternative to these picks, compare Killzone: Liberation and Resistance: Retribution. Their different camera perspectives change how you approach cover, aiming and encounters.
If you actually want competitive bouts and learning a fighter's moves, use our PSP fighting games comparison. If character builds and RPG progression are the priority, compare the PSP RPG recommendations. Those pages answer different questions from this action-adventure shortlist.

Getting started with PSP games on iPhone
For EMUspace, start with the PSP emulator setup guide for iPhone, then follow the game import instructions for your own compatible files. EMUspace does not include the games in this list. A purchase of a later console edition is not a PSP game file to import.
Before committing to a longer session, check that movement and the buttons you need are comfortable to reach. A compatible Bluetooth controller is an option if you prefer physical controls. EMUspace provides save and load controls in the game card and pause menu, plus Autosave on Exit. The save states and controllers guide explains those features.
Keep using the game's own save system as part of your routine. If a file does not launch, work through the games-not-loading checklist before assuming the problem is the control layout. Performance depends on the game, device and configuration; this shortlist does not provide measured frame rates.
External gamepads, Save / Load State and optional Autosave on Exit require EMUspace Pro. Enable the autosave option if you want it and exit the game normally; do not rely on a crash or forced closure to preserve progress.
Questions and edition notes
Which God of War game should I play first on PSP?
Chains of Olympus is the earlier PSP release and comes before the first God of War in the story timeline. Ghost of Sparta follows that first game's events. Starting with Chains is a straightforward way to compare how the two handheld entries develop, although both are separate adventures.
Are action games and fighting games the same category?
They overlap in a broad sense, but they serve different choices here. This list focuses on progressing through adventures. Our fighting-game page focuses on games chosen for their bouts, characters and combat matchups.
Are the PS4 and PS5 releases identical to the PSP versions?
No. For example, the PlayStation Store listings for Daxter and Size Matters describe later console conversions with additions such as rewind and video filters. Those additions should not be assumed to exist in the original PSP releases or in EMUspace.
