PS1 BIN and CUE Files: What to Keep Together
A BIN file holds disc data; a CUE sheet describes the disc’s track layout and points to the data files. Keep the CUE and all of its referenced tracks together. A tiny CUE file can be essential even though the much larger BIN looks like the only important item.
This guide explains the file relationship. Use the EMUspace import walkthrough for the app’s import controls and PS1 setup on iPhone for the broader setup process.

A disc can contain more than one track
An original PlayStation disc image may contain a data track and additional tracks. A dump may store these in one BIN or several BIN files. The CUE sheet records how the files and tracks fit together; it is not a second copy of the game.
Libretro’s PlayStation core documentation describes this role and uses the CUE sheet to load a disc image. Do not take a generic single-track example from a tutorial and apply it to an unknown multi-track dump. It cannot recover track information that you do not have.
If you received a complete folder from your own disc backup, preserve its structure before making changes. A successful transfer means copying the small metadata file as well as every large track file.
Multi-track and multi-disc are different
| Situation | Meaning | Keep track of |
|---|---|---|
| Several BIN files referenced by one CUE | Several tracks belonging to one disc | All referenced filenames |
| Disc 1, Disc 2 and later discs | Separate physical discs in one game | The correct disc and matching edition |
| Several unrelated CUE files | Possibly several separate games or discs | Which CUE belongs to which data files |
Do not import every track as if it were a separate game. Equally, do not merge multiple story discs merely because they share a title. Keep a note of disc numbers and use the disc-management workflow actually available in your app. This article does not assume that importing a filename creates automatic disc switching.
Check filenames before changing formats
A CUE is text, so its referenced names can be inspected with a text viewer. Compare those names with the files in the same backup folder. Spaces, punctuation and renamed suffixes can matter. A file called Track 01.bin is not the same filename as Track 01 (1).bin.
If a transfer app adds a duplicate-number suffix, restore a consistent working copy rather than editing several things at once. Preserve the original first. Check spelling and letter case exactly; a path that happened to work on one system may behave differently elsewhere.
Do not recreate a missing CUE from guesswork. Recover the original metadata from your own complete backup or redump the disc with an appropriate tool. Renaming a BIN to ISO does not reconstruct its missing layout.
When the title starts but something is missing
A title screen is a useful first check, but it is not proof that every disc track transferred correctly. If music or later loading behaves unexpectedly, compare the imported set with your original folder before assuming that the emulator needs a random setting change.
Record the exact game edition, the files you imported and the point where the issue appears. Our loading troubleshooting guide helps separate file, storage and launch problems. If the files are in iCloud, verify their local download status too.
Save-data files are a separate concern. They are not substitute disc tracks, and loading an emulator state does not repair an incomplete disc image. See save states versus in-game saves before moving or replacing progress files.
Questions answered
Can I delete the CUE after copying the BIN?
Keep it with the source backup. It describes the disc layout and may be needed by the import or loading workflow.
Are multiple BIN files duplicates?
Not necessarily. They may be separate tracks of one disc. Inspect the CUE references before treating them as duplicates.
