Spyro 2 PS1 Cheat Codes: Abilities, Colors and Big Head

Pause the original PS1 Spyro 2 before entering the button codes below. This guide focuses on the North American Ripto’s Rage! release, with built-in abilities and visual changes. It is not a Reignited Trilogy code list. The similar game names and overlapping codes make that distinction especially important when searching for help.

Read the sequence before pressing Start

During play, press Start to pause, then enter the required buttons in order. Use the directional pad for Up, Down, Left and Right. X means Cross. L1 and L2 are separate left shoulder inputs; R1 and R2 are separate right shoulder inputs. A comma means “then,” not “hold these together.”

Keep the full sequence visible while entering it. The long color codes share an opening, but the last button determines the color. If your controller layout has unfamiliar labels, check the mapped PlayStation inputs first. Our controller setup guide provides a useful starting point.

Abilities and appearance codes

EffectSequence while paused
Unlock learned abilitiesCircle, Circle, Circle, Circle, Square
Big head modeUp, Up, Up, Up, R1, R1, R1, R1, Circle
Flat SpyroLeft, Right, Left, Right, L2, R2, L2, R2, Square
Extra hit pointSquare, Up, Square, Down, Square, Left, Square, Right, Circle

The abilities code affects progression-related tools, while big head and flat mode change appearance. Decide which kind of experiment you want before entering one. If you are trying to understand the normal order in which the game teaches its moves, keep a separate ordinary playthrough for that.

This table deliberately says “extra hit point,” not invincibility. It does not promise unlimited health or freedom from every hazard. A code's exact effect is more useful than a dramatic label that hides its limits.

Change Spyro’s color

ColorSequence while paused
BlueUp, Right, Down, Left, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, X
RedUp, Right, Down, Left, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Circle
GreenUp, Right, Down, Left, Up, Square, R1, R2, L1, L2, Up, Left, Down, Right, Up, Triangle

Read these in three chunks: the opening directions and Square, the four shoulder buttons, then the final directional run and color button. The two directional runs are not identical. That reversed order is an easy detail to miss when entering a code from memory.

These are cosmetic choices, not separate playable characters. If you are deciding where Spyro 2 fits within the series, use our original Spyro trilogy order guide rather than treating a color change as a different edition.

Check the region and release

The Japanese PS1 release has documented differences: GameFAQs lists a different abilities sequence and notes that the extra-hit-point code does not work there. This page does not label the North American combinations as universal across every regional build.

Reignited Trilogy is also a different release. A search result may place its modern console combinations beside original PS1 entries, and a familiar effect name does not prove that the surrounding instructions belong to your game. Check the platform heading before copying a sequence.

For context on other games built around exploration and movement, our PS1 platformer guide is a useful next read.

Try one effect at a time

Begin with a short visual code so you can inspect a clear result after unpausing. If it does not work, check the input mapping before trying a longer sequence. There is little benefit in stacking several unconfirmed entries and then wondering which one changed Spyro.

Before experimenting with progression-related effects, preserve a normal game save you can recognize later. That is a way to keep your chosen playthrough organized, not a claim that every cosmetic code damages a file. Our save-state comparison explains which kind of save you are looking at.

Common questions

Do I enter these at the title screen?

No. The listed sequences are entered while ordinary gameplay is paused.

Why does a code mention four shoulder buttons?

The original PlayStation controller has L1, L2, R1 and R2. Each must have its own mapped input.

Where is the 99-lives code?

It is not included in this verified original-PS1 shortlist. Do not import a modern Reignited listing just because it uses the same game subtitle.

Were these codes personally tested in EMUspace?

No. The sequences were cross-checked against the original-PS1 references and an older gameplay demonstration listed below.
