Disgaea on PSP: Afternoon of Darkness or Dark Hero Days?

Start with Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness if you want the first cast and a straightforward introduction to the series. Choose Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days if its different story and additional monster-based systems appeal more. Both are tactical RPGs on PSP, but Dark Hero Days is an expanded version of the second game, not a better edition of the first one.

The useful decision is which adventure and systems you want to learn. A larger list of extra features does not automatically make one game a better first experience.

NIS America’s launch announcement identifies Dark Hero Days as the PSP version of Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories and names its added systems. Treat a PS2 guide as a starting reference only: it cannot explain content that was added for PSP.

For a newcomer who has no strong preference, Afternoon of Darkness provides the simpler narrative order. You can learn the recurring tactical vocabulary there, then recognize what the sequel changes. If you have already played the first story elsewhere, Dark Hero Days offers a different campaign rather than requiring another visit to Laharl’s opening chapters.

Learn to read Geo Panels before chasing levels

Colored Geo Panels can carry effects supplied by Geo Symbols. Those effects apply according to the affected panel color, so a dangerous map may become much easier when you understand the symbol arrangement. Destroying a symbol can also change panel colors and create a chain reaction.

Before moving a favorite attacker into the middle of a map, inspect the effects under both allies and enemies. Ask whether a symbol can be moved or removed, and whether doing so will improve the whole battlefield. A small positional change can be more valuable than another turn of ordinary damage.

The original Afternoon of Darkness manual uses these systems as core strategy lessons. Try a simple interaction in an early stage before attempting a long color chain. Watch the result, then repeat the idea deliberately. Understanding why the board changed is more useful than accidentally receiving a large bonus once.

Build a small team with clear jobs

It is easy to recruit an appealing collection of characters and then discover that you have not equipped or developed them consistently. Begin with a manageable core. Decide who handles close-range attacks, who provides ranged or magical options, and who will support recovery.

Use the map’s lift-and-throw possibilities as part of movement planning. Reaching a useful location is often a separate problem from winning the fight once you arrive. Check the destination before committing, especially where a panel effect changes what a unit can do.

If you prefer a tactical adventure with a more focused party progression, compare our Jeanne d’Arc beginner guide. The PSP strategy selection also helps distinguish Disgaea’s long-term development from other kinds of tactical planning.

Enter the Item World with a purpose

The Item World is a route to developing equipment through battles inside an item. It can become a substantial activity of its own. Before entering, decide what you want to improve and why that item matters to your current party, rather than choosing something simply because it is available.

Use the game’s explanations and a guide matched to your exact title when planning a longer trip. Floor progression, exit options and special encounters deserve attention before you commit to them. Keep a normal save outside the expedition so an experiment does not become your only record of the campaign.

A sensible first goal is to understand one short, successful visit. You do not need a complete endgame equipment plan while still learning the story maps. Our save-state and in-game-save comparison explains why a temporary snapshot should complement that ordinary save.

Understand what Dark Hero Days adds

Magichange lets a monster ally become a weapon for a humanoid ally. The transformed weapon and its skills depend on the monster. Toss & Pass adds another use for monsters by letting a thrown unit bounce onward in the direction the receiving monster faces. These are reasons to consider mixed parties instead of treating every monster as a substitute for a humanoid attacker.

Availability matters. The PSP mechanics references document Magichange in Axel Mode and its transfer into an Adell game cycle after completing Axel Mode. If a tutorial or video shows the command and your current story does not, check the mode and unlock conditions before assuming a control problem.

Start with one monster interaction, not several layered systems at once. Watch where the unit lands after a toss, or which commands the transformed weapon supplies. Once that relationship makes sense, you can decide whether it improves the party you actually use.

Optional US PSP code: start in Axel Mode

For the US PSP version of Dark Hero Days, highlight New Game on the title menu and enter:

Triangle, Square, Circle, Triangle, Square, Circle, Cross.

The sequence opens Axel Mode as a starting option. Cross means the PSP button commonly labeled X. GameFAQs’ US submission and the edition-specific Cheatbook listing agree on this sequence; the Japanese version uses a different one.

This is a native title-menu code, not a CWCheat memory address. It does not add levels or guarantee an easier campaign. Keep your existing save separate, and choose the ordinary story first if your aim is to learn Adell’s adventure in its normal order. The shortcut is most useful when you deliberately want to explore Axel’s material.

Common questions

Is Dark Hero Days a remake of Afternoon of Darkness?

No. They adapt different numbered Disgaea games.

Must I finish every optional challenge before the sequel?

No. Decide whether you want more of the first game’s development systems or a new story. Completion is a personal goal, not an entry requirement.

Is either game the same kind of tactics RPG as FFT?

They share turn-based positioning, but their development and map systems differ. Our Final Fantasy Tactics edition guide provides another starting point if you prefer that style.
