Crash Team Racing PS1 Cheat Codes: Racers and Bonus Tracks
In the original PS1 Crash Team Racing, enter these codes at the main menu while holding L1 and R1. Keep both shoulder buttons held, tap the listed inputs in order and listen for the confirmation sound. These are built-in button codes, so they are different from GameShark memory codes.

How to enter a PS1 CTR code
- Start the original Crash Team Racing and reach the main menu, where you choose modes such as Adventure.
- Hold L1 + R1 together.
- While holding them, tap the directions and face buttons in the order shown below.
- Release the shoulder buttons after the last input.
- Listen for the sound, then check the relevant character or track selection.
Directions mean the directional pad. “Right, Right” means two separate presses, not one long hold. Triangle and Circle refer to the PlayStation symbols, even when the physical controller attached to your device has different labels.
Character unlock codes
All six rows use the same main-menu procedure and require L1 + R1 to remain held. The table expands repeated inputs so there is no ambiguity about a notation such as “Circle × 2.”
| Racer | Inputs while holding L1 + R1 |
|---|---|
| Penta Penguin | Down, Right, Triangle, Down, Left, Triangle, Up |
| Ripper Roo | Right, Circle, Circle, Down, Up, Down, Right |
| Papu Papu | Left, Triangle, Right, Down, Right, Circle, Left, Left, Down |
| Komodo Joe | Down, Circle, Left, Left, Triangle, Right, Down |
| Pinstripe | Left, Right, Triangle, Down, Right, Down |
| N. Tropy | Down, Left, Right, Up, Down, Right, Right |
Check the selection in a suitable mode such as Arcade after activation. Unlocking a racer is not the same action as completing Adventure or earning its trophies. Keep those goals separate if you also want a normal campaign playthrough.
Turbo Track and extra battle arenas
At the same main menu, hold L1 + R1 and enter:
Right, Right, Left, Triangle, Right, Down, Down.
This unlocks Turbo Track and the bonus battle arenas Parking Lot, The North Bowl and Lab Basement. Look in the appropriate race or battle track selection; a battle arena is not a new Adventure race.
These combinations were cross-checked against original-PlayStation references. This is a selected practical set, not a claim that every rumored CTR cheat works. In particular, do not assume that a video showing a playable boss used an ordinary menu code; altered saves and external memory patches are different methods.
If the code does not register
Start with the short Pinstripe sequence. It is easier to count than a long effect code and helps isolate the input problem. Return to the main menu, begin from the first input and keep both shoulder buttons held throughout.
- Confirm the game. Nitro-Fueled is a separate remake with its own cheat behavior.
- Check shoulder mappings. L1 and R1 are not L2 and R2.
- Use distinct direction taps. An accidental diagonal can make a careful-looking sequence incorrect.
- Check the virtual PlayStation buttons. Do not translate by the printed Xbox or Nintendo letters without looking at your mapping.
- Change one thing at a time. Repeatedly switching the game, controller and sequence together makes the cause harder to find.
Our Bluetooth controller setup guide can help with the controller connection. It does not change the game’s required button sequence.
Keep a normal progression save
Before experimenting, keep a normal save made without the codes. To return to that progression, restart the game and load the clean save rather than resuming an emulator state captured after activation. An unlock already recorded in a save should not be assumed to disappear just because the application was closed.
The save states versus in-game saves guide explains why those two recovery methods differ. Label an experimental save clearly if you want to keep both experiences.
For racing without shortcuts to unlocks, explore our PS1 racing selection. If the characters make you curious about the platform adventures, the Crash Bandicoot trilogy order is a separate guide to the main PS1 games.
Common code questions
Where do I enter the Penta Penguin code?
At the original CTR main menu, with L1 and R1 held. Use the first row of the character table.
Are these Nitro-Fueled instructions?
No. They are for the original PlayStation game. A shared sequence does not make every other cheat rule identical across versions.
Do I need a GameShark?
No. The listed combinations use the game’s own menu input. This page does not claim support for an external cheat engine in EMUspace.
Were these codes tested in EMUspace?
No game-specific test is claimed. The sequences and their input context were checked against the original PS1 references linked below.
Sources and scope
Game mechanics were checked against Neoseeker’s PSX code reference, the original-PS1 SuperCheats character list, GamesRadar’s PS1 cheat archive. The starting priorities are editorial recommendations, not a report of a game-specific EMUspace test.
